The cause of death has been confirmed for Jessica Aber, the former U.S. attorney for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, who was found dead in her Alexandria home in March.
The Virginian-Pilot reported that the local chief medical examiner ruled Aber, 43, died in her sleep from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Her family confirmed she had managed epilepsy and seizures for many years.
Police said early in the investigation that there was no evidence of foul play and that her death appeared to be due to natural causes.
Aber resigned from her position in January following the change in presidential administrations. Appointed in 2021, she was the first woman confirmed as U.S. attorney for the court in Virginia in nearly a decade. She led one of the busiest and most prominent districts in the country, overseeing cases involving national security, public corruption, fraud, and international crime.
The New York Post reported that one of Aber’s most notable cases involved ex-CIA analyst Asif Rahman, 34, who pleaded guilty to leaking top-secret documents about a plan by Israel to attack Iran in 2024. The leak, for which Rahman was convicted, was blamed by analysts for forcing Israel to delay its planned Iran attack.
Aber resigned her position on the day President Donald Trump was inaugurated in January for his second term. The resignation was in keeping with the traditional transition of U.S. attorneys during a change in administration.
