Ga. GOP Chair McKoon to Newsmax: Party Still Needs Strong Turnout

By    |   Tuesday, 05 November 2024 09:04 AM EST

Georgia has had more than 4 million voters casting early ballots, but the state will still need to have "strong Republican turnout" Tuesday to put former President Donald Trump and other party candidates over the finish line, state GOP Chair Josh McKoon told Newsmax.

"We've had an incredible turnout of early voting here in Georgia," he said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "Over 4 million voters have voted and over 800,000 of those did not vote in the 2020 election. We think that's very good news for President Trump. He polls very well with low-propensity voters. Those have been a big target of our campaign here for the last 17 months."

Trump is also doing well in the exurban counties near Atlanta, said McKoon, but "of course, today will decide it."

Meanwhile, McKoon said he supports getting back to the traditional Election Day voting, but "one of the things I said, when I ran for chairman last year, is we have to play by the rules of the game as they are, and that's three weeks of in-person early voting here in Georgia."

As of now, because of the emphasis on early voting, Republicans are ahead of where they were four years ago, he said.

"I mean, we have turned out millions of Georgia Republicans already. We know who needs to turn out today. We've spent the last four days being laser-focused, getting those people out to the polls. And we're ahead of where we were four years ago."

This means embracing early voting "is a key to getting Donald Trump elected, because now we're able to sprint towards the finish line. We don't have to worry as much about losing voters that we banked over these last three weeks."

Meanwhile, the Georgia Supreme Court has overturned a judge's ruling that extended the deadline until Friday in Cobb County for about 3,000 absentee ballots that were sent late, which RNC Chair Michael Whatley called a huge win.

"We're so grateful to Chairman Whatley and co-chair [Lara] Trump," said McKoon. "We've had so much support from the RNC on the legal side of the House, and this was a key case to make sure that we upheld Georgia law."
