Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., told Newsmax on Tuesday that some Democrats may be breaking federal law by assisting in the harboring of illegal immigrants, calling the practice a crime punishable by imprisonment.
During an appearance on "Finnerty," Mace reacted to New Jersey Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy daring ICE to come after someone he suggested had uncertain immigration status.
"This is actually a violation of federal law with imprisonment up to five years by harboring an illegal alien," Mace said. "As Gov. Murphy from New Jersey is, it falls under Title 18 of the U.S. Code of Laws. It is illegal. You can't encourage, incite, harbor, or aid illegal aliens who are here. You are breaking the law.
"If you are doing that, I would encourage the left to do more of it, because what you're doing is letting Tom Homan know, letting ICE know, letting Homeland Security know where these illegals are so that we can then deport them," she said.
The congresswoman's remarks come as some jurisdictions across the country are reconsidering sanctuary city policies.
According to acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director P.J. Lechleitner, certain counties and cities that previously refused to notify ICE when releasing illegal immigrants are now discussing increased cooperation with federal immigration authorities, NBC News reported.
Lechleitner told NBC News that some jurisdictions are now considering advance notice for ICE when releasing migrants convicted of violent crimes, signaling a potential shift in immigration enforcement strategies.
