Rep. Van Duyne to Newsmax: GOP Has a Lot to Do Before Trump Takes Office

By    |   Monday, 06 January 2025 12:34 PM EST

Republicans have "a lot to do that the American people are entrusting us to get done" and voting in a House speaker was the first order of business, Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, said on Newsmax Monday.

"I mean, I think a lot of us were just ready to move on. We wanted to make sure that we got a speaker. That's the first thing you have to do before you can even get sworn into office," Van Duyne told "National Report."

"Then we had to vote for a rules package. We've got a lot to do that the American people are entrusting us to get done in the first 100 days of this presidency.

"And that's exactly what we intend on working on. People voted in November because they were sick of what's happening at their border. They're sick of what's happening in their pocketbooks. They want inflation under control. They want government spending under control. They want the United States to be able to exert its leadership again, to actually have a seat at the table and not just relinquish it like we have the last four years," she added.

"So, with that, you know, we have a mandate from the people. We've got a plan to move forward. And we I'm glad that we were able to with one vote, extended vote as that may be. I'm glad that we were able to do it in one vote. And now we're moving on as a party."

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday avoided the dayslong ordeal that his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, endured to become speaker, his relatively swift victory was hardly a unifying moment.

Van Duyne told Newsmax Republicans will back incoming President-elect Donald Trump's one sweeping border, energy and tax bill.

"I know that there was discussion earlier on whether or not we're going to have one reconciliation package or two," she said.

"I think we're anxious to be able to as a party, as an elected body of representatives who have again been given a mandate. We need to move forward, making sure that our border is secure.

"We need to move forward, making sure that the Border Patrol has their resources, that we are looking at American energy Independence again, that we are attacking our regulatory agencies and that we have a tax package that continues the tax cuts that were created under the Trump First Presidency, under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, that would prevent 90% of tax paying Americans from experiencing one of the largest tax increases that they've ever had if we don't get it passed.

"So, I'm confident that we as a party, sure, we're going to have some decisions to make. There's going to be some negotiating. We're going to have a few months to be able to do that. But we're trying to get this package in front of the American people in February. When we want to have it complete, we want to have it actually voted on the floor of the House the first week in April."
