Nurse Running Against Rep. Massie in '26 GOP Primary

By    |   Tuesday, 01 July 2025 07:49 AM EDT

Niki Lee Ethington, a nurse who has never sought office, is the sole candidate so far to file as a primary challenger to Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District.

Her candidacy comes on the heels of a just-released poll conducted by Trump pollster John McLaughlin and reported by Axios that shows 52% of 4th District GOP voters said they would support a Trump-endorsed candidate over Massie and only 23% said they support Massie.

Moreover, President Donald Trump recently vowed to defeat Massie in the GOP primary next year and launched a political action committee to fund Trump-supportive candidates in the race. So far, MAGA Kentucky has raised $500 million and just launched its first attack on the six-term incumbent who opposed Trump on his "Big, Beautiful Bill" and was critical of the U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

"I was born right here in Louisville and raised with the kind of values that stick with you for life: hard work, resilience, faith, and personal responsibility," Ethington told Newsmax, "Those early years shaped my character and taught me to appreciate the importance of family, community, and doing what's right even when it's not easy."

Ethington and her husband have spent the past 20 years on a farm in Taylorsville in the 4th District, where, in her opinion, "the values that matter most to folks here are God, country, and community."

This is a connection, she feels, that Massie has lost.

"His focus has shifted toward building a national profile rather than addressing the everyday needs of the people right here at home," said Ethington.

"Massie is vulnerable," writes Ethington, pointing to the McLaughlin poll showing 74% of the district's voters said they approve of the one, big, beautiful bill Massie has consistently opposed.

In sharp contrast, Ethington fully backs Trump's measure because she believes tax relief and the good-paying jobs she feels it will generate are highly important to the 4th District.

"And I am proud to stand with [Trump] and with the America First movement because this is exactly what this district demands and deserves," she said.

Along with being a registered nurse, Ethington also served as a probation and parole officer and 911 operator — experience she says gives her the ability to stay calm and think quickly in the high-pressure Washington environment.

"We have a failed system when the borders are left wide open." She said, "The damage to our communities alone from the drugs pouring in I've seen firsthand."

In embracing the Trump agenda, the challenger maintains her prospective constituents notice Massie's arguments with Trump. In contrast, she said, "my focus will be building strong working relationships, not just with the president but with members across the aisle, all with a clear mission: deliver results for District 4, and America."

In taking issue with Massie's public opposition to Trump, Ethington emphasized that "[t]his is not personal. It's about accountability. I respect anyone who chooses to serve, but if you have lost touch with the people and stopped delivering real results, it's time to step aside."
