The tax-and-spending megabill, with an expected vote in the Senate on Monday, is "essential for the growth of the country" and most likely will make it to President Donald Trump's desk for his signature, but "it's not going to be easy," former Rep. Pete King said on Newsmax, Sunday.
"The bill is still alive, but I can't tell you exactly how it's going to be done," the New York Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America Weekend." "Once they get this close and the president is strongly committed to getting it through one way or the other, I think it's going to make it through the Senate [and] ultimately it will make it through the House."
And even though the fight over some of the bill's provisions continues, "when you get down to the two-yard line, the one-yard line, one way or the other they will get it across," King said. "It's not pretty, and it's not the type of thing that maybe you learned in high school civics class, but it's the way government works and Congress works when it's at its best. I mean, this is what democracy is about."
Former Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., also on Sunday's program, said that if, for some reason, the bill does not pass, that will be a disaster not only for President Donald Trump, but for the Republican Party and the country."
"Middle-class families all across America will have tax increases," he said. "It will impact the economy. We won't be able to move forward on the immigration deportations that are so desperately needed. We won't be able to build the 'Golden Dome' that the president wants for the military. So the consequences of not passing this are extremely harmful for the country and thus the ruling party, the governing party, the Republicans."
King also commented on the ongoing claims that the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities earlier this month was not as effective as the Trump administration is saying.
"No matter how you look at it, it was extraordinary," he said. "No matter how you look at it, the nuclear program of Iran has been pushed back. It's been delayed. That gives us opportunities to put more economic pressure on Iran. Further, the Iranians know that if they attempt to move further with their uranium enrichment activities, Trump will launch another attack."
"I think the deterrent effect that President Trump has implemented is the most important," he said. "In any event, the world is better off today than it was 10 days ago. The United States is infinitely better than it was 10 days ago, and we are now right now, calling the shots. That is most important."
