A poll of registered voters shows another drop in the number of people supporting the Democrat Party. The latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll shows a decline in voter support, falling to 40%. That's a 2% slide for Democrats compared with the group's poll in June.

The poll's disapproval rating for Democrats bumped up a corresponding amount to 60% in the current poll of registered voters compared with a 58% disapproval rating from June.

Republicans are showing 12 percentage points better with a 48% disapproval rating from voters in the poll. That's a 4% improvement based on the 52% disapproval rating in the June poll.

Democrats have seemingly been struggling to regain footing after their losses from the 2024 November general election, which President Donald Trump soundly won over Vice President Kamala Harris. Republicans also have majority control of the House and Senate.

A Democrat strategist recently proclaimed the party to be "leaderless, messageless, and agendaless."

The poll does point to some potential openings for Democrats. The job approval rating for Trump is strongest on immigration at 50% and on returning American values, also at 50%. Approval of Trump's handling of inflation and tariffs is now at 42%.

Mark Penn, co-director of the poll, said, "Trump's approval rating has stabilized, but it's a split electorate, and the administration will ultimately rise or fall based on his ability to handle inflation."

The Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll was conducted July 6-8 among 2,044 registered voters as a collaboration of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll. The margin of error is ±2.2%.
