The Republican Party's gains this past election season exceeded retaking the White House and control of Congress, as the GOP also now controls 24 state legislatures in 2025 compared to just 15 for Democrats, according to The Cook Political Report.
Another 10 states are split, while one, Nebraska, is neutral.
The big wins for Republicans were flipping Michigan and earning a split in the Minnesota House, according to Cook.
The gains will help President-elect Donald Trump push through policies that some governors in blue states are prepping to resist at every turn, especially when it comes to deporting illegal immigrants.
The governors of California, Illinois, Washington, and Colorado have taken steps to Trump-proof their states, while attorneys general of two more, Minnesota and Arizona, have vowed lawsuits against, what they call, "unconstitutional behavior."
"What we are doing is pushing back against increasing threats of autocracy fortifying the institutions of democracy that our country and our states depend upon," Illinois Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker said.
Of the seven battleground states that Trump swept in defeating Vice President Kamala Harris on Nov. 5, six of those legislatures are split. Only Georgia is under Republican control.
