Billionaire Elon Musk posted a photo of himself on X wearing a Santa suit on Christmas to show off his new, slender physique. Calling himself ‘Ozempic Santa,’ the Tesla CEO touted the benefits of the new, popular weight loss drugs in the social media post.

According to the New York Post, Musk noted that the title of his post is “Like Cocaine Bear, but Santa and Ozempic!” He then clarified that he’s actually taking Mounjaro, a drug that belongs to an increasingly popular class of prescription drugs known as GLP-1s, that include Ozempic and Mounjaro, says Scripps.

The drugs were developed to help regulate blood glucose and insulin levels in people with diabetes, but more Americans have turned to the GLP-1s for weight loss. In fact, according to a poll, 1 in 8 adults (12%) in the United States have taken a GLP-1 medicine at some point in their life, either for weight loss, to treat diabetes or to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The 53-year-old Musk said that he prefers Mounjaro over Ozempic because there are fewer side effects at high doses, like “farting and burping.” The incoming head of President-elect Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency also noted that Mounjaro is more effective in helping people lose weight.

In a recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers compared Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in real-world conditions and found that people who took Mounjaro lost significantly more weight than those who took Ozempic. Moreover, the longer the patients kept taking the drugs, the wider the gap became.

Musk has been a long-time advocate of weight-loss drugs to combat the nation’s obesity epidemic. His stance conflicts with the opinion of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who suggests that Americans should forgo medications and eat healthier to lose weight.

Kennedy, who has been picked to lead the Department of Health and Human Services by Trump, wants Americans to focus on their diets.

“If we just gave good food, three meals a day, to every man, woman and child in our country, we could solve the obesity and diabetes epidemic overnight,” he said, according to USA Today.

The World Health Organization has classified obesity as a disease and Dr. Alexandra Sowa, author of The Ozempic Revolution says that like other diseases, such as thyroid disease, medication is necessary for treatment for many people with obesity.

“The biology of weight gain has been affected by both genetic and environmental factors such as more microplastics in our food and in the air we breathe that act as hormone disruptors and trigger weight gain,” says Sowa. “We suffer more stress and lead sedentary lives, factors that contribute to obesity. For people who carry a lot of excess weight, dieting alone is seldom successful.” That’s where the GLP-1 drugs come in, she asserts, by reducing your appetite and cravings for processed foods.

Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist at Yale University also sings their praise. “While we need to be thoughtful about who uses them and how to make them more affordable, the science behind their net benefits is very strong and getting stronger,” he says.
