Marianne Williamson Seeking DNC Chair Post

By    |   Thursday, 26 December 2024 11:13 AM EST

Marianne Williamson, the self-help author who has run for president twice, has launched a bid to chair the Democratic National Committee, saying her campaigns have given her the experience needed to "make things right" for the party after its election losses in November.

"MAGA is a distinctly 21st-century political movement and it will not be defeated by a 20th-century tool kit," Williams said in a post on her Substack account, reports The Hill on Thursday. "Data analysis, fundraising, field organizing, and beefed-up technology — while all are important — will not be enough to prepare the way for Democratic victory in 2024 and beyond. That's why I have decided to run for DNC Chair this year."

Williamson suspended her primary campaign before the Iowa Democratic caucus in 2020. In this year's race, she suspended the campaign in February but then unsuspended it and remained in the race for the nomination.

Current DNC Chair Jaime Harrison has held the seat since 2021 but is not expected to try to stay for another term.

The field of candidates to replace Harrison, in addition to Williamson, includes New York state Sen. James Skoufis, former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin, former Homeland Security official Nate Snyder, and Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler.

The candidates have been promising to rebuild the party in the years ahead as Republicans will gain control of the White House and both chambers of Congress in January.

Williamson wrote that if picked as chair, she will "work to reinvent the party from the inside out."

"If we want a new President in four years, and a new Congress in two, then we must immediately get about the task of creating a new party," she said.

Elections for a new party chair and other DNC leadership positions are scheduled for Feb. 1, less than two weeks after President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, at the party's winter meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.

The DNC is planning four forums in January to allow the candidates for chairperson to make their cases to the committee members.
