Speaker Johnson Pitches New Budget Proposal

By    |   Tuesday, 11 February 2025 08:48 AM EST

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., reportedly pitched a new budget proposal on Monday night.

Johnson's latest plan includes between $1.25 trillion and $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, to offset a massive domestic policy package, Politico reported.

The total amount of cuts in the speaker's plan surpasses what Johnson proposed to his GOP conference members last month but remains lower than the $2.5 trillion demanded by some conservatives.

Johnson's latest proposal also includes tax cuts totaling less than the $4.7 trillion agreed to during their White House meeting on Thursday, Politico reported.

The House continued to work on developing budget legislation as Senate Republicans prepared to hold a budget committee vote Wednesday to move ahead with their two-pronged strategy to enact President Donald Trump's budget, NBC News reported.

Johnson told Fox News Sunday that it will take some time to secure Republican consensus amid the party's thin House majority, but he said they would find savings to offset the cost of extending 2017 tax cuts that are due to expire at the end of the year and other priorities such as excluding tip income from taxation.

The speaker circulated his latest plan among leading House Republicans late Monday. He then planned to present the new budget plan at a closed-door conference meeting Tuesday morning, Politico reported.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and other senior Republicans asked Rep. Jodey Arrington, chairman of the House Budget Committee, what his more conservative committee members would think of Johnson's new plan. Arrington indicated he didn't know, Politico reported.

Senior GOP members also wanted to know what Arrington would say about the proposal in the Tuesday morning conference meeting.

GOP leaders and conservatives thought they had a tentative deal for as much as $2 trillion in spending cuts as recently as Friday, but Trump being against steep Medicaid cuts became a sticking point.

Politico reported that Republican leaders told members that Trump wasn't yet on board with the major Medicaid cuts it would take to secure up to an additional $800 billion in savings.

Republicans want to use special budget reconciliation procedures to pass their sweeping border, energy and tax package.
