Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., told Newsmax on Friday that Congress needs to avoid the "confusion" of the last few weeks and quickly elect a House speaker so legislators can "hit the ground running" in January.
The House is set to vote next week on whether to reelect House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., or select a new person for the role.
Harris said on "Wake Up America" that the House Freedom Caucus wants "to make sure that the House is in a position to deliver on the Trump agenda to the American people. That's all."
"If we can get structural changes or changes under current leadership that would reflect that, that's fine. If not, we should consider what's best for the country in terms of, again, advancing Donald Trump's agenda," he added.
Harris pointed to "the confusion over the last two weeks," when House Republicans rejected a bipartisan spending bill just days before the deadline to avoid a government shutdown.
The Maryland Republican added that this incident "kind of indicated that we're not quite there yet at a position where we're going to be able to do that. But again, you know, we're every single day we're talking about how we get to where we need to be in the beginning of January. The American people can't wait … we have to hit the ground running, overturning the Biden agenda."
Harris also said that the election of a new House speaker likely won't take multiple rounds of votes as it did last time, saying that "the dynamics are different in a couple ways."
"Now Donald Trump is going to have a say in who the next speaker is," Harris said, "and of course we have the extreme timeframe limitation of January 6th for certification, which can of course extend a couple more days."
