Rep. Donalds to Newsmax: 'I Would Support' Trump EO on Voter ID

By    |   Monday, 16 February 2026 06:58 PM EST

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., told Newsmax that he would throw his full support behind an executive order from President Donald Trump to require voter ID to participate in federal elections.

Donalds told "Ed Henry The Big Take" on Monday that "I would support an EO on voter ID."

He said the bigger question is whether that type of presidential order would survive a legal challenge. "It remains to be seen if it's going to stand up to scrutiny of the Supreme Court because ultimately, that's where that would land."

But he said that will not dampen his support for nationwide use of voter ID since it has worked well in Florida. "But let's also be very clear in Florida, we have voter ID, we've had it for as long as I've lived in Florida; that's 30 years.

"It's never been a problem for anybody being able to cast their ballot in the great state of Florida."

Donalds said opposition to voter ID from Democrats shows their true agenda. "So, the fear mongering from the political left is just that, fear mongering.

"And they're doing it because you have some crazy states like Minnesota, where you could have a voter basically be a sponsor for seven other voters during an election."

"I mean, that stuff is crazy," said Donalds. "But that's what they do."

Or look at Oregon, said Donalds, where another approach to voting abuse takes place.

"Where they send mail, they do all mail-in balloting. They send absentee ballots to everybody on their voter list, regardless if they're an active voter or not. Again. Crazy."

Donalds said he hopes if Congress fails to pass the SAVE America Act requiring voter IDs in federal elections, Trump will step in and fill the void.

"I think that the president moving with an EO…[I] would love to support that. We'll see if they have the tools to make sure it survives the court challenge."

The SAVE America Act still faces an uncertain future in the Senate in 2026. But Republican leaders are looking at a plan to work around the filibuster rule to allow a simple majority vote to approve the measure and send it to the president for final approval.
