Foreign policy analyst Walid Phares told Newsmax that Iran is intentionally dragging out the negotiations with the U.S. to try and "gain as much time as they can" while the country develops its nuclear ambitions.
On Saturday, Iran and the United States met in Rome to discuss newly imposed sanctions on Tehran designed to discourage the nation's attempts to acquire a nuclear weapon.
"I've heard that the regime is saying, 'Oh, why don't we start by one of the sanctions to be removed as a test?' So they're going to play that game on and on," Phares said during an appearance on "Saturday Agenda."
"But I'm sure that the administration understands that they could do demonstrations to the Islamic regime, like finishing off the Houthis, then that would impact them."
Phares said Iran is in a weak state due to the decimation of their proxies by Isreal, so the U.S. has the upper hand in negotiating.
"So there are things that the Trump administration can do around the region. If the Trump administration starts to display the Iranian opposition, inviting them to the White House, that is even more terrible for the regime," he said.
"So the president has many tools."
