Sen. Thune: Ties With Trump 'Strong' Amid SAVE America Act Fight

By    |   Monday, 23 March 2026 10:53 AM EDT

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., insisted his relationship with President Donald Trump remains "strong" despite differences concerning the SAVE America Act.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Thune emphasized that while tensions have emerged over how to pass the election integrity legislation, both leaders remain aligned on broader Republican priorities and committed to working together.

"I think the president understands: He's got a job, I have a job," Thune said. "They're different, but we sort of need each other."

The dispute centers on the SAVE America Act, a sweeping Republican-backed bill focused on voter ID requirements, citizenship verification, and limits on mail-in voting — policies widely supported by conservatives and a key priority for Trump.

While the House passed the measure earlier this year, Thune faces a major hurdle in the Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow 53-seat majority.

Under current rules, most legislation requires 60 votes to advance, meaning Democrats can block the bill unless Republicans move to eliminate or weaken the filibuster.

Trump has repeatedly urged Thune and Senate Republicans to take aggressive action, including scrapping the filibuster if necessary.

He has also warned that no broader legislative deals should move forward without passage of the SAVE America Act, calling it "the single most important piece of legislation that Congress could pass."

But Thune has taken a more measured approach, warning that the votes simply are not there within the GOP conference to change Senate rules.

"I can do my best, but you've got 52 other Republican senators who have their own views," Thune said, stressing the realities of governing with a slim majority.

Despite the disagreement, the White House has echoed Thune's assessment that the relationship remains intact.

Officials pointed to recent cooperation on major legislation, including tax reform, as evidence the partnership continues to deliver results.

The friction highlights a broader strategic divide within the GOP.

Trump and his allies are pushing for bold, immediate action to deliver on campaign promises, while Senate leadership is navigating institutional constraints and internal divisions.

Thune has attempted to bridge that gap by advancing debate on the SAVE America Act, aiming to unify Republicans and put Democrats on record opposing election integrity measures.

Still, Thune has acknowledged he cannot guarantee the bill's passage under current conditions.

At the same time, outside pressure is mounting. Conservative activists and grassroots supporters have flooded Senate offices with calls demanding action, while some Trump allies have criticized Thune for not moving more aggressively.

Trump himself has intensified the pressure, calling on Thune to identify Republicans who oppose the bill and warning of political consequences for those who fail to support it.

Even so, Thune remains focused on maintaining unity within the conference and preserving a working relationship with the president.

"We're headed toward the same objective," he said. "But we have a different process for how to get there."

As the Senate prepares for a key procedural vote on the SAVE America Act, the outcome could test not only Republican unity but also how far GOP leaders are willing to go to advance Trump's agenda.
