Maine Mayor Warns of Coming ICE Operations

By    |   Thursday, 15 January 2026 01:37 PM EST

Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline warned residents this week that federal immigration authorities could soon be active in the city, saying in a statement that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may carry out enforcement actions "soon."

Sheline did not explain in the statement how he learned of the possible operation or offer additional details about what it might entail.

"I understand that this is an unsettling time for many of our residents," he said. "Lewiston is a strong city and we care about our community and each other. Please check on your neighbors and stay safe."

Along with urging calm, Sheline encouraged residents and local businesses to know their rights and prepare a "plan of action" in the event they are stopped by ICE agents.

Federal officials did not confirm any planned action. Asked about Sheline's statement referencing a potential operation in Lewiston, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin declined to confirm it.

"Every day, DHS enforces the laws of the nation across the country," she told NBC News. "We do not discuss future or potential operations."

Maine Gov. Janet Mills also said the state has tried to verify reports of possible federal operations but has been unable to do so.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, Mills said her administration is preparing for a potential federal presence. She said she directed Maine State Police to work with local law enforcement, has been in contact with city officials in Portland and Lewiston, and is coordinating with the attorney general's office.

"If any operations take place, our goal — as always — will be to protect the safety and the rights of the people of Maine," the mayor said.

At the same time, Mills issued a pointed message to federal authorities, warning certain things would not be tolerated.

"If your plan is to come here to be provocative and to undermine the civil rights of Maine residents, do not be confused — those tactics are not welcome here," she said.
