James, Bragg, and Willis Have More Than Betrayed the Public Trust
The U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous decision that states cannot strike presidential candidates from state ballots was a massive defeat for the progressive left which has been on a crusade to weaponize the American civil and criminal justice systems against conservative political opponents.
In today’s progressive, regime media and political environment, it is acceptable to aim left-wing prosecutorial guns at conservative political adversaries.
Just look at how Biden's Department of Justice (DOJ) and sympathetic left-wing prosecutors have launched unprecedented politically inspired attacks against former president Donald Trump in numerous cases nationally.
There was a time in our country’s history when the civil and criminal justice systems in the segregated South were weaponized against those such as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for expressing political viewpoints opposed to the prevailing white supremacist culture.
During those times, there was a rightful demand for Black prosecutors who it was believed would understand the history of the law and enforce it as mandated by our Constitution.
Today, Black prosecutors perform their duties admirably throughout our nation.
Given that history, it's especially disheartening to see three prominent Black prosecutors use their offices to join the "get Trump" political lynch mob.
I refer to New York Attorney General Letitia James, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and Fulton County Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis.
Let’s start with Letitia James, the first Black woman elected to the office.
She could go down in history as the worst attorney general in the history of the great state of New York.
That history includes the well-respected Louis Lefkowitz, who served 22 years in that position, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and my former boss in the U.S. Senate, Jacob K. Javits.
What if a Republican candidate for New York attorney general had based their campaign on a promise to get Rev. Al Sharpton as James promised to get Trump?
Once she got the decision she had sought against Trump, James unprofessionally gloated over her victory and boasted that if he couldn’t raise the record $400 million plus judgment she would seek to seize his assets.
In case you hadn't noticed, this constituted nothing short of pure, unrestrained political grandstanding.
One positive result of James' vendetta against Trump has been the departure of significant investors and businesses from New York.
Who wants to be the next business in the bullseye of James because of their political views?
James has missed her calling.
She would be welcome in Venezuela or countless other developing nations where the government targets political adversaries.
Another example is New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the first Black District attorney for New York County.
He downgraded over half of felony cases to misdemeanors and promised to go after former President Trump.
He is so disrespected that an Arizona prosecutor is refusing to send a murder suspect back to New York City, observing that "it’s safer to keep him here and keep him in custody so that he cannot be out doing this to individuals . . . either in our state . . . or anywhere in the United States."
And then we have Fani Willis in Atlanta.
As noted in this space, she is Fulton County's first Black female district attorney.
Her claim to fame is that she prosecuted the racketeering case against former president Donald Trump, which even Georgia Governor Brian Kemp felt was a "very political" process.
After allegations arose of an alleged adulterous affair with her then-married prosecutor colleague Nathan Wade, she wasted little time playing the race card.
In an apparent attempt to influence a potential Fulton County jury pool, she quoted scripture before Black church audiences, arguing that criticisms of her were based on race.
One of them even gave her a "Black History Achievement Award."
If all of this was not enough, questions have arisen as to whether she and Wade skewed their testimony on the witness stand regarding when their illicit relationship began.
Cell phone record evidence indicates that she and Wade were engaged in a relationship long before his appointment, which contradicts their testimony.
If true, the new allegations could lead to perjury charges against both and jeopardize the entire case.
The presiding Judge has indicated that he will decide on Willis and Wade's fate in the next two weeks.
They are an embarrassment to their offices, should cut their losses and resign!
James, Bragg and Willis have betrayed the legacy of those who fought for the equal application of laws and to assure public trust in our legal system.
As "firsts," they could have been examples of the best — instead, they will be rated among the worst.
