The car rental company Turo is "actively partnering with law enforcement" as authorities investigate two deadly incidents involving vehicles rented through their app.
Early in the morning on New Year's Day, a Texas man drove a rented Ford pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing more than a dozen people and injuring 30 more. Later that same day, a man in Las Vegas detonated explosives that were placed inside a rented Tesla Cybertruck while parked outside the Trump International Hotel, killing the driver of the vehicle and injuring seven other people.
The Turo app operates similarly to Airbnb, allowing users to rent cars from private vehicle owners without ever meeting in person.
"We are shocked and saddened by today's horrific events, and our hearts are with the victims and their families," Turo said in a statement.
"Our trust and safety team is actively partnering with law enforcement authorities to share any information that could be helpful in their investigations. We do not believe that either renter had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat, and we are not currently aware of any information that indicates the two incidents are related."
Law enforcement announced on Thursday that each event is considered "an isolated incident" and said there's no indication that the crimes were connected.
