Apple's new artificial intelligence system used to summarize information in notifications has misinformed iPhone users on a number of stories, including one reportedly of Luigi Mangione shooting himself, the British Broadcasting Corporation said in a filed complaint.
According to the Daily Mail, one notification from Apple, citing the BBC as a source, read, "Luigi Mangione shoots himself; Syrian mother hopes Assad pays the price; South Korea police raid Yoon Suk Yeol's office."
Upon being made aware of the error, a spokesperson from the BBC contacted Apple "to raise this concern and fix the problem."
The Mail reported that the misleading summary stemmed from Apple Intelligence, Apple's new artificial intelligence system, which was initially released on Oct. 28, 2024.
Notably, the 26-year-old suspect, accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is alive and being held in a Pennsylvania jail while he awaits extradition.
However, this is not the first reported incidence of Apple's AI confusing the headlines. On Nov. 21, a similar instance befell The New York Times when Apple's AI wrote, "[Benjamin] Netanyahu arrested; Jussie Smollett's conviction overturned; [former Florida GOP Rep.] Matt Gaetz withdraws from consideration." But Israel's prime minister was not arrested at that time, nor did the paper report the story as such.
