If a bill proposed by Rep. Buddy Carter is passed, Greenland will be not only acquired by the United States, but also bear a new name — "Red, White, and Blueland."

The Georgia Republican Monday presented a bill that would empower President Donald Trump to begin talks to "purchase or otherwise acquire" Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, and give it a new name befitting its link with the United States, reported the New York Post on Tuesday.

"America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland," Carter said in a statement. "President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal."

Carter's proposal gives the Office of the Secretary of the Interior six months after its passage to ensure that federal documents are updated reflecting the icy island's new name.

Denmark has insisted that Greenland is not for sale, but Trump, who has long called for the United States to acquire the island, renewed his push after he won the election.

Greenland, which has a population of about 57,000, has been ruled by Denmark since the 19th century. But Trump says obtaining the island is important to U.S. national safety interests because of its natural resources and proximity to the Arctic Ocean.

Meanwhile, a group of Danish citizens has started a satirical campaign to buy California in a pushback against Trump's plans, reports Indian network NDTV on Tuesday.

The campaign, calling itself "Denmarkification," says it is seeking crowdfunding to raise $1 trillion for its buyout.

The campaign's website says California has several advantages, including sunny weather, and says that it wants to name the state "New Denmark" and turn Disneyland into "Hans Christian Andersenland" in a tribute to Denmark's fairy tale author."

"Have you ever looked at a map and thought, 'You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates,'" the website says, adding that Trump might be willing to sell California for the right price.

But Trump's push to buy Greenland is "not a joke," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a recent interview.

As the United States has been "on the hook" to defend Greenland from attack since a 1951 treaty was signed, "we might as well have more control over what happens there," he told podcast host Megyn Kelly.

"This is not about acquiring land for the purpose of acquiring land," he added. "This is in our national interest and it needs to be solved."

Vice President JD Vance said in an interview earlier this month that acquiring Greenland is "really important to our national security. There are sea lanes there that the Chinese use, that the Russians use. Frankly, Denmark, which controls Greenland, [is] not doing its job, and it's not being a good ally."
