Gov. Doug Burgum, R-N.D., says he's worried about another 9/11-type attack in the U.S. after more than three years of President Joe Biden's southern border policies.
Burgum, who reportedly is on former President Donald Trump's shortlist to fill the vice-presidential spot on the Republican national ticket in November, appeared Wednesday on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show and was told that at least 10 million people have crossed the southern border under Biden.
Hewitt then asked Burgum whether he worried that domestic terrorists were in the U.S. and possibly planning another large-scale terrorist attack.
"I’m very worried," Burgum said. "I mean, it was 20 people that were behind 9/11, executing that across four different attack vectors on one day. So it is a huge threat.
"The possibility of a 9/11 event occurring on our soil with people that have come in under Joe Biden has increased dramatically. There’s just no doubt about it."
The New York Post reported Thursday that more than 1,500 migrants from Tajikistan, a country known for being an ISIS breeding ground, have entered the U.S. from Mexico between October 2020 and May 2024.
Burgum blamed the Biden administration for not fulfilling the federal government's responsibility regarding national security.
With members of the North Dakota National Guard deployed to help Texas patrol the U.S.-Mexico border, Burgum said he has been to the border "more than Vice President [Kamala] Harris, more than Biden has been down there."
"And I’m not down there like [California Democrat Gov.] Gavin Newsom doing selfie videos. I'm down there talking to our troops that are doing the work."
Burgum told Hewitt that his state's National Guard members were flying Lakota helicopters from the San Diego coast across to the Gulf Coast. For a year, they were in charge "of flying night missions trying to stop the cartels."
"And there are so many gaps in the border where the bad guys take down our surveillance," Burgum added. "We don't have people, and then we don’t even have video of it."
The governor said lack of video fails to track gotaways, who evade authorities when crossing the border.
"The Customs and Border [Protection] of the Biden administration puts that number out there with the millions of gotaways, but there's another thing, which is the unknown gotaways," Burgum said.
"They disable the cameras. There's a blind spot. And they surge people across when we’re not looking. We don’t know how many people have come across."
