Months after a ferocious January wildfire torched the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles, destroying thousands of homes and displacing stars like Jeff Bridges, Mel Gibson, and Billy Crystal, a fight has broken out over rebuilding.

Homeowners, some still sifting through ashes, are pushing back against state and local efforts to cram denser housing into their single-family zones, calling it a government "land grab" that tramples property rights and ignores fire safety.
