President Donald Trump is now calling on congressional Republicans to "work as fast as they can" to get the "big beautiful bill" on his desk before July 4.

The original target date had been by July 4.

Trump made his case in a post to Truth Social on Monday, the same day that lawmakers returned from recess.

"With the Senate coming back to Washington today, I call on all of my Republican friends in the Senate and House to work as fast as they can to get this Bill to MY DESK before the Fourth of JULY," he said in the post.

The sweeping tax and policy measure, which will fund Trump's domestic agenda, passed the House last week by one vote and now sits before the Senate, where a handful of Republicans are pledging not to vote for the bill in its current format.

At issue for Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., among others, is that House Republicans did not come close to cutting enough spending. The budget bill will increase the deficit in the short term, with Paul also dead set against the inclusion of a debt ceiling hike.

Other senators are opposing the proposed cuts to Medicaid.

However, in a separate post Monday, Trump asserted "there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid."

"The only 'cutting' we will do is for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse, something that should have been done by the Incompetent, Radical Left Democrats for the last four years, but wasn't," Trump said in that post.

Trump's new challenge leaves Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., with a three-vote margin to pass the legislation, ostensibly with changes and more cuts, which would then need to thread the needle in the House to land on Trump's desk in a month.

"I think we have enough to stop the process until the president gets serious about spending reduction and reducing the deficit," Johnson said last week. "The big, beautiful bill; I think that's the Titanic."
