Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is considering a backup plan to fund the government in the event his much-maligned 1,547 page continuing resolution fails in the House, The Hill reported on Wednesday.
Johnson is considering a "clean" continuing resolution, according to sources who spoke with the outlet. The plan B would remove the additional provisions that were included in the initial spending package negotiated by congressional leaders, including disaster aid and economic assistance for farmers.
Word of a backup plan comes as Johnson is facing intense criticism on his proposed CR from President-elect Donald Trump's inner circle.
Vivek Ramaswamy, co-chair of the proposal DOGE initiative posted, "I wanted to read the full 1,500+ page bill & speak with key leaders before forming an opinion. Having done that, here's my view: it's full of excessive spending, special interest giveaways & pork barrel politics. If Congress wants to get serious about government efficiency, they should VOTE NO."
Fellow DOGE head and Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared Ramaswamy's antipathy to the bill urging Republicans to torpedo the measure, writing, "Actions matter, sweet talk is irrelevant. Kill the Bill."
