Google Calendar no longer includes references to Black History Month after the company recently opted to move away from cultural observances.
According to the Washington Examiner, Google began phasing out cultural holidays from its online and mobile calendars in the middle of last year.
Along with the start of Black History Month on Feb. 1, other events that will no longer be displayed are the beginning of Women's History Month on March 1, Pride Month on June 1, and Indigenous Peoples Month on Nov. 1.
"Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world," a Google spokesperson said in a statement. "We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn't scalable or sustainable."
Google has made a number of changes after the election of President Donald Trump in November, including recently abandoning its diversity hiring goals. The tech giant became the latest company to alter its hiring and promotion practices after Trump signed an executive order to end the diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the federal government shortly after taking office.
Google last month said it would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico on its Maps app to the "Gulf of America" after Trump issued an executive order renaming it.
The company also said it will follow Trump's lead and start using the name "Mount McKinley" for the mountain in Alaska currently known as Mount Denali.
In mid-2024, Google "returned to showing only public holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com globally, while allowing users to manually add other important moments," the company spokesperson said.
Calendar users reportedly commented on the display changes on the user support websites and on social media. Conversely, the support site previously received comments from users who were not in favor of the company adding such observances to the calendar.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai was among a contingent of tech CEOs in attendance at Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C.
