Federal judges in Manhattan on Monday extended Jay Clayton's term as the district's top federal prosecutor, as Senate Democrats block President Donald Trump's nominee for the U.S. attorney role from being permanently confirmed.

Clayton, former SEC chairman, became interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York on April 16,  after Senate confirmation was blocked. With federal  judges bypassing the Senate to appoint him permanently, his role has been secureed as Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor over cases involving Wall Street, corruption, and national security.
