Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said the "text is ready" on a two-bill reconciliation plan that will extend the Trump tax cuts, address border security, and lay out an energy policy.

"We've been ready for a while. … Everything is ready to go," Thune told Politico.

House Republican leadership is still eyeing passing the reconciliation package in one bill. Thune said Republicans in the Senate are "waiting to see what the House is going to do."

"I think there's a point at which we will decide to pull the trigger," he told Politico.

The Senate would pass a bill focusing on border security, energy, and defense measures and then pass the bill to extend the tax cuts passed during President Donald Trump's first term.

The Senate bills would be approved under a reconciliation procedure, which requires the adoption of an identical budget resolution by the House and Senate, Politico said. Thune said the text is ready for the first bill, and then they would prepare to pass the second bill.

Senate Republicans expect Budget Chair Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to move forward with the tax cut bill in the next two to three weeks, Politico reported.

At a Republican House retreat in Florida, committee chairs have outlined their plan for fiscal savings to offset the tax cuts.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters that Republicans want a budget resolution number that will be a floor of what they hope to achieve in savings.

With a slim House majority, Johnson said Republicans need to accept that not everyone will get everything they want in the legislation.
