Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen had harsh words for President Donald Trump's administration as officials prepare to visit Greenland, a Danish territory.
"This is clearly not a visit that is about what Greenland needs or wants," Frederiksen said Tuesday, according to Politico.
Usha Vance, wife of Vice President J.D. Vance's, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright were scheduled to be on the trip as Trump has continued to talk about wanting to purchase Greenland.
"It is unacceptable pressure being put on Greenland and Denmark in this situation," Fredericksen said. "And it's a pressure we will stand against."
Outgoing Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede called plans by the U.S. delegation to visit an American military base and attend a dog sled race a "provocation," and said his caretaker government will not meet with the group.
Fredericksen said Trump is serious about buying Greenland and called it a threat to the territory.
"He wants Greenland," Fredericksen said. "Therefore, it cannot be seen independently of anything else. When you make a visit like this and the Greenlandic politicians say they don't want this visit, you can't interpret that as respectful."
Trump reiterated his support for purchasing Greenland at a Cabinet meeting Monday.
"I think Greenland is going to be something that maybe is in our future," he said.
Brian Hughes, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said the delegation aimed to "learn about Greenland, its culture, history, and people."
