A new Siena College poll found that most New York state voters agree with New York City Mayor Eric Adams that the unprecedented migrant influx is destroying the Big Apple.
Published Tuesday, 58% of respondents agreed with the Democrat mayor that the surge "will destroy" the city, with 32% disagreeing. Another 3% were in the middle, and 8% did not know or refused to answer.
A massive 84% of respondents called the migrant crisis a serious problem, compared to 12% who said it was not a serious problem.
Those who saw it as serious included 81% of Democrats, 94% of Republicans, and 82% of independents.
The results come after Adams made the comment during a September town hall while pleading for more federal and state assistance to help the city process and house large numbers of asylum seekers.
"This issue will destroy New York City," Adams said about the surge. "We're getting 10,000 migrants a month. Now, again, people from all over the globe have made their minds up that they're going to come through the southern part of the border and come into New York City."
The month that Adams made the declaration, there were nearly 60,000 occupying beds in traditional city shelters in more than 200 emergency sites.
As of mid-October, over 130,600 migrants had arrived in New York City since the spring of 2022, according to The New York Times.
Adams has warned the crisis will cost the city around $12 billion over three years.
"While New York City will continue to lead, it's time the state and federal government step up," the mayor said at a recent news conference.
