Poll: More Than Fifth of Americans Back Hamas Over Israel

More than one-fifth (21%) of American voters back the Hamas terrorist organization over Israel, according to a Harvard/Harris poll released Monday.

Democrats had the highest level of support for Hamas at 25%, while the terrorists group's backing was 20% among independents and 19% among Republicans.

Other results form the survey:

  • Backing for Hamas was highest among those ages 25 to 34 at 32%, while support for the terrorist group over Israel was only 10% among those over the age of 65.
  • Overall backing of the ceasefire-hostage deal was 82%, with Democrats the most in favor of the agreement at 87%. Among Republicans, 81% supported the deal, while 78% of independents also backed it.
  • Those 55 or older were the most supportive of the ceasefire-hostage agreement at 88%, while only 64% of adults 24 or younger backing the deal.
  • Among all voters, 57% said Hamas agreed to the hostage deal due to the incoming Trump administration, while 43% credited the Biden administration.
  • Support for former President Joe Biden's handling of the war has gone down since the conflict started to 33% in this poll, as opposed to 44% who backed his handling of the war in October 2023.

The survey was conducted by Harvard University's Center for American Political Studies and the Harris Poll, a U.S. survey company. The poll was conducted Jan. 15-16 and questioned 2,650 registered voters.

The margin of error is 1.9% on a 95% confidence level.
