A majority of voters say President Joe Biden has put America on the wrong track, while 42% of voters look back at Donald Trump's tenure in the White House as "mostly good years," according to a New York Times/Siena poll.

The survey asked respondents — "Do you think the United States is on the right track, or is it headed in the wrong direction" — and 25% said the right track and 64% said wrong direction.

A Times analysis noted the findings showed "while memories of Trump's tumultuous and chaotic administration have not significantly faded, many voters now have a rosier picture of his handling of the economy, immigration and maintaining law and order."

"Ahead of the 2020 election, only 39% of voters said that the country was better off after Mr. Trump took office. Now, looking back, nearly half say that he improved things during his time as president," the analysts wrote.

Related findings:

  • 43% of voters have a very favorable or somewhat favorable opinion Trump; 41% have a favorable or somewhat favorable opinion of Biden.
  • 64% approved of Trump's handling of the economy; 63% disapprove of Biden's job on the issue; 4% rated the economy currently as excellent, 17% as good, 27% as fair, and 52% as poor.
  • 48% of voters strongly agree that Biden is too old to be an effective president, while 21% somewhat agree, 14% somewhat disagree, and 13% strongly disagree.
