Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 5 percentage points, according to a new USA Today/Suffolk University poll conducted after she accepted the Democratic Party's nomination.
Harris' lead of 48% to 43% is significant after a similar poll conducted in June when President Joe Biden was the nominee showed Trump ahead by 3 points over the then-incumbent.
The lead for Harris is fueled by big shifts among key demographic groups, including Black, Hispanic, and young voters, according to polling.
The poll of 1,000 likely voters was taken between Sunday and Wednesday. It has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
It found that:
- Voters 18 to 34 moved from supporting Trump by 11 points to supporting Harris by 13 points, 49% to 36%.
- Hispanics moved from supporting Trump by 2 points to supporting Harris by 16 points, 53% to 37%.
- Black voters moved from supporting Biden by 47 points to supporting Harris by 64 points, 76% to 12%.
