Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said President-elect Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency could see bipartisan consensus on cutting defense spending.
Khanna said in an interview on "This Week," both Democrats and Republicans would agree on a leaner, meaner defense and cutting costs.
DOGE is being run by tech mogul Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
"Our defense budget is pretty gigantic. It's a trillion dollars," Musk said last month. "The interest we owe on the debt is now higher than the defense budget. This is not sustainable."
While Musk and Ramaswamy said they want to cut spending overall by $2 trillion, lawmakers have said it would be very difficult to achieve.
"These guys are going to get their eyes open," one Republican lawmaker told The Hill after a meeting with Musk and Ramaswamy.
Khanna has long been an advocate for reigning in wasteful defense spending.
"We should work with DOGE to … increase competition, and invest in technology that will strengthen our national security," Khanna said in a statement.
The congressman said in the interview that cuts to Social Security, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Medicare should not be on the table.
Khanna told "This Week" he would like to see DOGE address Medicare and private health costs.
