Just one week after winning the special election in Texas' 34th District, flipping the seat to the GOP, Rep. Mayra Flores, R-Texas, assumed office in the House on Tuesday.
She marked the event of being the first Mexican-born woman in Congress with a tweet showing her name plate on her House office door.
"My very first day in office and it's a memorable one for sure," Flores tweeted hours before her swearing in. "This is what dreams are made of; faith, family, and hardwork. #TX34 #DreamsComeTrue"
Flores' election has her filling out the rest of the term of former Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Texas, who retired this spring to join a lobbying firm. That term ends this coming January, leaving her to have to face Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, in a much more blue-heavy district in December.
That leaves Flores with little time to make a name for the first Mexican-born woman in Congress — after flipping the district red for the first time in more than 100 years.
Her official swearing-in ceremony is 6:30 p.m. ET, and she is lamenting she cannot bring more family for the momentous occasion.
"When you're a Latina and there's a limit to the amount of family that you can bring for your swearing in 😅 #TheStruggleIsReal," Flores tweeted Monday before flying to Washington, D.C.
