Former President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign formally has petitioned Meta to unlock his Facebook account, NBC News reported.

Trump's Facebook account was locked following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

"We believe that the ban on President Trump's account on Facebook has dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse," the campaign wrote in a Tuesday letter, a copy of which was reviewed by NBC News.

The campaign, which did not threaten a lawsuit, talked about the importance of free speech and petitioned Meta for a "meeting to discuss President Trump's prompt reinstatement to the platform."

NBC News reported that a Meta spokesperson declined to comment about Trump, but added the company "will announce a decision in the coming weeks in line with the process we laid out."

Facebook and Twitter both banned Trump a day after the Capitol attack.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who took over the social media platform in October, announced Nov. 19 that Trump's account would be "reinstated."

Trump, who has used his own Truth Social platform to post on social media, hasn't tweeted since his account was reactivated.

"Trump is probably coming back to Twitter. It's just a question of how and when," one Republican told NBC News.

"He's been talking about it for weeks, but Trump speaks for Trump, so it's anyone's guess what he'll do or say or when."

Another Trump confidant told NBC News that the former president has sought input for weeks on returning to Twitter, and that campaign advisers have suggested ideas for his first tweet.

Trump officially kicked off his 2024 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in November.
