An all-time high percentage of Americans say they approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing less than three weeks into his second White House term, according to a new CBS News/YouGov survey.

Although Democrats have complained about several of Trump’s Cabinet picks and the Department of Government Efficiency, which has been tasked with finding ways to streamline government and reduce spending, 53% of U.S. adults say they approve of the president’s overall job performance, CBS News/YouGov survey results released Sunday show.

The approval percentage is higher than it has ever been in CBS News polling.

A share of 47% say they disapprove.

The survey also found that 51% say Elon Musk and DOGE should at least have some influence over government operations and spending. Of that, 23% say DOGE should have a lot of influence.

When it comes to Trump's top priority of national security and clamping down on the migrant crisis that exploded under former President Joe Biden, 59% say they approve of the president's program, and 41% say they disapprove.

Not only that, 64% say they approve of sending U.S. troops to the southern border to stop illegal migrants from crossing into the U.S. Only 36% say they disapprove.

During Trump’s first week in office, the Pentagon announced that about 1,500 troops were being sent to the border, as the department scrambled to put in motion Trump’s executive order demanding an immediate crackdown on immigration.

CBS News/YouGov poll results show Americans say they are split — 48% favor, 52% oppose — on the idea of creating large detention centers where people would be kept. Trump's 2024 voters are strongly in favor of that.

When asked about the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, 54% say they approve of how Trump is handling the crisis, while 46% disapprove.

As for Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. take over Gaza, only 13% say it's a good idea, while 47% say it's a bad idea and 40% say they are not sure.

When asked to describe Trump, CBS survey respondents’ top four answers were "tough" (69%), "energetic" (63%), "focused" (60%), and "effective" (58%).

The survey also found that 70% of Americans say Trump is doing what he had promised on the campaign trail. Only 30% say his actions in office are different than he promised.

Survey results also found that 66% say Trump is not focused enough on lowering prices. Also, while saying they favor tariffs on Chinese imports, a majority say the oppose tariffs on Mexico, Europe, and Canada.

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted Feb. 5-7 among 2,175 U.S. adults, divided to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey. The poll has a margin of error of plus/minus 2.5 points.
