Xi Jinping Warns Against International Interference on Taiwan

Chinese leader Xi Jinping Sunday warned the world against international interference when it comes to Taiwan, insisting that only China will decide when and how unification will come about.

China will "continue to strive for peaceful reunification," Xi said during his speech at the Chinese Communist Party's congress, but still will maintain the right to use "all measures necessary."

"This is directed solely at interference by outside forces and a few separatists seeking Taiwan independence," he also said, drawing applause from the delegates at the conference, reports The New York Times.

Taiwan and its independence have been becoming a priority for the United States and other countries around the world, including President Joe Biden's comments about the U.S. military coming to Taiwan's aid if there is an invasion.

Analysts are interpreting Xi's words on Taiwan as a follow-up to the white paper published by China after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August amid strong protests from the Chinese government.

After she traveled to Taiwan, the Chinese Communist Party conducted military exercises and dispatched military aircraft and ships near Taiwan, sending the message that it was reserving the right to invade the islands or to take action to cut off Taiwan from the rest of the world.
