Former National Transportation Safety Board investigator Alan Diehl told Newsmax on Thursday that he has many questions about the midair collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines plane Wednesday in Washington, D.C., that killed 67 people.

"Everything is on the table right now," Diehl said on "American Agenda" of the NTSB's investigation. "They've got the audiotapes. They've got the radar tapes. They'll be looking at that."

Diehl said he is curious if the helicopter crew was wearing night vision goggles, which can affect field of view. Diehl said he expects the NTSB to investigate the role air traffic control played in the crash and whether the helicopter just didn't see the American Airlines plane.

"They've got the evidence," Diehl said. "They'll be looking at it systematically. It looks like the controllers simply told the Army crew to cross behind the American jet. And they obviously didn't do it."

Part of the investigation will include finding out which pilot in the helicopter had the controls at the time of the crash.

"They're going to recreate what the out-of-cockpit view looked like from the helicopter and see if, if the structure of the helicopter may have blocked that American jet," Diehl said.

"There's a lot of issues that are going to have to be systematically examined here. And the NTSB is, if nothing else, is thorough and methodical."
