Joy is "something that we need to really embrace and know where does real joy come from," says Bishop Joseph Strickland.
"Joyful Sunday is sort of looking ahead and preparing our hearts for the joy of Christmas," Strickland said Saturday during an appearance on Newsmax's "America Right Now."
"In a few days, Christmas, we will be singing the familiar hymn Joy to the world, the Lord has come, let Earth receive her King. And so, joy, I think, is something that we need to really embrace and know that, where does real joy come from? And hopefully our families, loved ones, dear friends, as we gather at Christmas, that really is the heart of the joy.
"I think as I get older and my white beard indicates that I am getting older, as we get older, we recognize the things that all the presents, all of the stuff that isn't really the source of the joy," he added.
"The joy is the people encountering loved ones, being together … looking to the future for hope and light. Those images of light pervade Advent and Christmas and Hanukkah, and I think it's a reminder that for God, we are all his beloved children, sons and daughters, all of us, no matter what path we're taking, we're called to take the one path. And we know that path is the way and the truth and the life that is Jesus Christ."
