Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colo., told Newsmax on Tuesday that the most effective thing the U.S. government can do to keep American cities safe is to "just get back to basic border security."
Immediately following President Donald Trump's inauguration, the new administration began fulfilling a campaign promise by conducting targeted raids to rid communities across the country of criminal illegal immigrants. Evans shared the tragic story of a illegal migrant who killed a mother and child in his state after "being deported three or four times."
"And so if we don't start with border security, then everything else is just an exercise in futility because you can deport somebody, and they will come right back and continue to commit the problems in our society. I looked up some data this morning in Colorado, 7,000 Coloradans from 2020 to 2023 have died as a result of illegal drug overdoses. That's more than double the death toll that happened on September 11," Evans said during an appearance on "The Chris Salcedo Show."
The representative from Colorado's 8th Congressional District said the drug-related deaths are "a direct result of sanctuary state policies."
"And so, absolutely, this is something that I campaigned very heavily on, and I'm committed to as a former police officer and as the grandson of immigrants from Mexico, we have to get back to a rule of law that protects our communities and doesn't allow these illegal, transnational criminal organizations to peddle poison in our neighborhoods," Evans added.
