The Colorado Supreme Court decision to remove Donald Trump from the presidential ballot is "outrageous and completely un-American," Dave Williams, chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, told Newsmax on Thursday.
The court ruled Tuesday that Trump is disqualified from holding the presidency under the Constitution's so-called insurrection clause and ordered the secretary of state to exclude his name from the state's Republican presidential primary ballot.
"It strikes at the very heart of our democracy," Williams told "National Report."
"One of the bedrock principles of this country is that you get to vote for the candidate you want to vote for. So first and foremost, we're going to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court. … We're also going to start the process of seeking a waiver with the RNC so we can pivot from a primary to a caucus in the event that the Supreme Court doesn't overturn this ridiculous ruling."
Making the change to a caucus would require permission from the national Republican Party, cooperation from the Colorado Secretary of State's office, and preparations for a larger caucus in March.
Williams said the ruling is something "we should all be afraid of because this isn't just an issue in Colorado.
"It's on the front lines. This is an issue that's going to have devastating effects across the country.
"If this isn't overturned, you're going to see secretaries of state and other lawsuits pop up to remove Donald Trump from all the other ballots, so we really need the Supreme Court to step in. But if they don't, we're going to be prepared with our caucus," Williams said.
