President Donald Trump boldly suggested earlier in the week that neighboring Arab countries such as Jordan and Egypt take in Palestinian refugees while the Gaza Strip is rebuilt.
The idea was promptly rejected by both countries, with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas saying forced displacement would be a serious violation of international law.
David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador to Israel in Trump's first term, told Newsmax on Wednesday that "Trump is calling out the hypocrisy of all these countries."
"I mean, they profess to care about the Palestinians but haven't done a thing for them in 50 years," Friedman told "The Record With Greta Van Susteren." "You know, all these countries have been very sanguine about letting Israel choke on the Palestinian population. It's time to alter that calculus. And I think President Trump is saying to Egypt and Jordan, you've got to be part of the solution now, not part of the problem."
Friedman, the author of "One Jewish State: The Last, Best Hope to Resolve the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict," said he agrees with Trump’s path to achieve "complete victory."
"That's the answer," he said. "And I think that's what we heard from President Trump only yesterday. The idea of getting everybody out of Gaza, including the terrorists, including the civilians. If the terrorists don't want to leave, well, they just lost their most valuable weapon, which are the human shields that the human civilians that they've been using for a year and a half to defend themselves."
