Minnesota Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips, who is not seeking reelection this cycle, told Newsmax on Tuesday that political division has always existed in America, but it is one's own choice how to respond to it.
"I look at Dixville Notch as such a metaphor for our country right now," Phillips said.
Phillips's remarks come as the tiny New Hampshire township showed a tie vote, with three votes for Vice President Kamala Harris and three votes for former President Donald Trump.
"Division isn't the problem," the congressman continued. "We can have political division. We've had it our whole history in this country. It's more about how we handle it in the streets and our communities and our churches or synagogues or mosques. And no matter who wins tonight, I really hope our better angels appear and that we do something to reconcile with one another, respect one another, and get out of this morass. And I think a lot of that has to do with our two parties that are leading us down some really dangerous paths."
Phillips pinned the political division in the United States on party leadership or lack thereof, and the most extreme wings of either of the two parties being the most vocal.
"We tend to elevate candidates who do not represent the mass number of Americans. I call us the exhausted majority: center right, center left. And a country that's predicated on competition, I think should encourage it in our political arena as well. And most people don't know these are two private corporations. And I'm afraid the anger-tainment industry, coupled with just two parties is leading us down some really dangerous paths. All I want is more options, better people, more competency."
