Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., rejected criticism from the House Freedom Caucus over the GOP's deal with President Joe Biden to raise the debt ceiling for two years, telling Newsmax on Monday that Republicans "rolled the White House" in negotiations.

Steil, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, told Newsmax's "Wake Up America" that the GOP has to "be a little bit of realists here," as Democrats control the executive branch and the Senate.

With that advantage, Steil said, Biden "thought he was going to roll House Republicans and get a clean debt ceiling, but what we showed is we actually rolled the White House."

Steil said that demonstrates that Biden's "dangerous and reckless tactic of not negotiating and putting his head in the sand ... ultimately played out as a failure for the president and allowed us to begin chipping away at the reckless spending in Washington."

Steil said this "is a real chance for us to finally cut spending in Washington. It is a step in the right direction," emphasizing that "for the first time in my career we're going to actually spend less money next year than we are spending this year."

He added that Republicans also achieved work requirements and no new taxes, saying the deal "is a win for conservatives."

Steil added that "it's not the end of the ideological battle with the Left, but maybe it is the end of the beginning. We can prove to the American people that we can cut spending in Washington, go win elections, and then come back and let's take over two more branches of government ... and then get on with the real work with the substantive reforms all conservatives would like to see."

Another advantage to the deal, Steil said, is that it "sets the spending caps for all the appropriation bills for this upcoming fall," which means "we have caps in place with teeth ... [and] can actually enforce these spending caps."

He also voiced optimism that "if Republicans remain united and show strength as we did coming into the debt ceiling negotiations, we have the best ability to actually go after the liberal approach that this administration wants to take us on."
