Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., told Newsmax on Wednesday that President-elect Donald Trump "overperformed in blue states like New York."
On Tuesday, Trump became the first Republican to win the national popular vote in 20 years garnering more than 72 million votes as of Wednesday night, according to DecisionDesk HQ.
Stefanik told "Rob Schmitt Tonight" that Trump's message of "securing the border, bringing law and order, and pushing back on Democrat, failed, defund-the-police policies" resonated in blue states.
"And on top of that, President Trump campaigned in New York," she said. "The mainstream media attacked him for doing so. But whether it was his Madison Square Garden rally, whether it was his events in the Bronx or on Long Island, that was a way to reach out to voters that, frankly, the Democrats feel they are entitled to. And yet they don't earn their vote."
Stefanik, who has represented New York's 21st Congressional District since 2015, said it was a "big night" for her home state, adding that Trump had "the strongest performance for a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in the state of New York."
Trump gained about 11 percentage points in New York over his previous two presidential elections. He lost the Empire State by 22.6 points (59.4%-36.8%) to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and by 23.2 points (60.9%-37.7%) to Joe Biden in 2020. Harris won the state by 11.6 points (55.8%-44.6%).
Reagan was the last Republican candidate to win the state, with 53.8% of the vote in 1984, but George H.W. Bush was he last to finish with more than 45% of the vote, in 1988, when he lost the state to Michael Dukakis with 47.5% of the vote.
