Former New York Gov. George Pataki told Newsmax on Thursday that the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks brings back a "huge sense of loss" nearly a quarter century later.

"It's still incredibly sad and just a horrible memory of hundreds, thousands of wonderful people who lost their lives that day," Pataki said on "Newsline." "And it's just always something that when you think back on it, you just feel this huge sense of loss.

"And yet being down on ground zero this morning, you also have this sense of courage and inspiration because you're showing the photos of the construction workers and the police and the fire [department] and the courage they had. The way they responded really inspired America and the world."

Thursday marked 24 years since the Sept 11, 2001, attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Pataki was also asked to comment on the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was killed Wednesday on the campus of Utah Valley University.

"I cannot tell you how upset I am at the assassination of Charlie Kirk," Pataki said. "To me, he really represented the best of America in a young generation. He was out there every day fighting the fight, not with bombs or knives or guns, but with words and ideas.

"And that represents the best of America. And he understood the greatness of this country and the greatness of our freedom and the challenge it was under."
