It is "morally unconscionable" for the government to continue adding on to the national debt when the United States already has such a large deficit, Rep. Greg Lopez, R-Colo., told Newsmax on Monday.
Lopez emphasized on "Wake Up America" that to "continue spending the people's money when we have a $36 trillion debt that grows by a trillion dollars every 100 days, then it is just morally unconscionable. We are putting all that debt on the shoulders of our young children, and we can do better than that, and we are going to do better than that."
Lopez, who is on the House Budget Committee and a member of the new Department of Government Efficiency caucus, recently sent a letter to Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who are slated to lead DOGE, illustrating how Congress is guilty of massive unnecessary spending.
This year alone Congress has spent more than half a trillion dollars on unauthorized appropriations spanning more than 1,200 expired authorizations.
"Congress is falling down on doing its job," Lopez stressed, stating that "we are supposed to pass 12 appropriation bills and we haven't done that ... it's time for Congress to really do its job ... to focus in on passing the 12 appropriation bills and evaluating all these ... programs that have been funded, even though they're not authorized and they've expired."
Lopez cited DEI initiatives as one of the prime examples of wasteful public spending, saying "it is absurd on the number of dollars that we are spending on DEI, and it's time we do away with it."
He reiterated that this is especially so since DEI backers have been carrying out these initiatives "just to create more divisiveness. It's not about bringing unity."
