First son Hunter Biden's surprise appearance on Capitol Hill Wednesday shows he "thinks he is too good" to testify before House Republicans, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Newsmax.
"People look at Hunter Biden and they see the embodiment of two tiers of justice, and he considers himself obviously to be above the law — so much so that the day he was to give depositions he shows up and he does a press conference in front of the Capitol," Blackburn told Thursday's "Wake Up America." "And then [Wednesday], basically, he just thumbed his nose at the committee."
Hunter Biden caused a stir on Capitol Hill when he made an unexpected appearance at a House Oversight Committee hearing where Republican lawmakers were pushing for a vote to hold him in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify in their impeachment inquiry of his father, President Joe Biden.
"He waltzes into the hearing room and he takes his seat, flanked by his entourage, and then he sits there for a few minutes," Blackburn said. "I mean, they should have locked the doors and not let him leave and made him testify and answer some of the questions that the committee had.
"It is standard procedure when you're doing a Senate or House investigation to do depositions first, and then after that, you move to a hearing, but he thinks he is too good for that and that the Biden-led DOJ [Department of Justice] is going to do nothing to him."
GOP lawmakers allege the president and his family raked in millions from an influence-peddling scheme that Hunter Biden and other relatives ran during Joe Biden's time as vice president in the Obama White House. Both Joe Biden and Hunter Biden have denied any wrongdoing.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the full House usually votes to direct the contempt certification to a U.S. attorney after a committee holds its vote. Enforcement of congressional contempt rulings is generally done by the Department of Justice.
Contempt of Congress carries a punishment of a fine not exceeding $100,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months.
