Having a successful, stress-free holiday season starts with taking care of yourself, Dr. Jeff Gardere told Newsmax Wednesday.
"It's really important to be able to set your boundaries as to which holiday events that you want to attend, and that you're physically and emotionally able to do so," Gardere said on "Newsline." "Who are the people that you're going to surround yourself with so that you really can enjoy the holiday cheer?"
Gardere said people need to ensure they eat the proper food and get enough rest.
"It is important that you take care of yourself first, so that you can be present for everyone else," Gardere said.
For people who suddenly find themselves getting invited to a lot of events and who may have social anxiety, Gardere said it's important to be around company you enjoy being with.
"Spend time with the people who do excite you, who do make you feel better," Gardere said. "Being able to be in touch with others — friends, distant family, and so on — is very important at this time because if nothing else, we are human beings, and it is important that we have that human connection for sure."
It is also helpful to remember the joys of the holidays that don't cost anything, yet still create memories, like seeing the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, Gardere said.
