San Diego County Superviser Jim Desmond told Newsmax on Friday that the county’s new “super” sanctuary policy — that he voted against — is “ludicrous” because “it’s going to make our community and our country less safe.”

Following a 3-1 Board of Supervisers vote, law enforcement in San Diego County, California, is no longer allowed to contact federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities without a warrant, even when dealing with illegal immigrants who have been accused of violent crimes.

“If we're not deporting these people that have committed these heinous crimes and mostly against their own people, other immigrants, that if we don't deport them, they're going to be allowed back into our communities and onto our streets,” Desmond told “Wake Up America.”

“You know, we all want legal immigration, but if people come here illegally and then commit felonies and beyond, and we're talking about kidnapping, we're talking about rape, we're talking about using a gun in a violent crime. These are people that nobody wants on the streets and so I think this is going to make us less safe and could put more strain on our law enforcement if we can't deport these heinous criminals, that are here illegally in the first place, back to where they came from,” he added.

When asked why anybody would support allowing violent criminals to remain in their communities, Desmond said that “nobody does,” adding “that’s why this is so ridiculous.”

“I think a lot of this has to do primarily with President [Doanld] Trump winning the election and the fact that Gov. [Gavin] Newsom is doubling down on efforts to anti-Trump the state of California and my colleagues, who usually follow lockstep with the governor, are doing the same thing,” he said.

“It really does not make any sense and, quite frankly … even though the sheriff says, well, she's not going to abide by this policy, we've already had a group threatening to sue the sheriff for not doing that. So, this isn't over and I really hope the sheriff does still enforce, but she may not be able to, her hands might be shackled. But there's more to come.”

Desmond said he hopes that “there’s enough pressure from the community and also from the Trump administration” to force his fellow San Diego County supervisers to reverse their stance on boycotting ICE.

“I really hope it comes to a head because I think we all, like I said, we all want safe neighborhoods and this is directly in conflict with that,” he said. “And it's just ludicrous to let them go back out onto the streets. We've seen many murders and rapes across the country of people that are here illegally, and it's primarily because they've been let go by some sanctuary city, sanctuary state, to let them back out on the streets once they're in custody.”
